PRESS RELEASE #4

McLaughlin received enormous support from all over the nation yesterday.  Wearing Black and Orange became the choice attire all over the Standing Rock reservation and surrounding areas.  Sororities in Florida, Hospitals in Montana and alumni in Colorado all reached out and offered their support in wearing orange and black with us.

Two students are home, as well as one of the teachers.  One student will be released today.
Again, the school board, administration and staff want to thank all of you for your support and prayers.

PRESS RELEASE #3

One staff member and two students will return to McLaughlin today.  McLaughlin School, Sitting Bull College, Standing Rock Middle School and other schools and businesses across the Standing Rock Reservation are wearing black and orange, the school colors, in support of our families and staff still in Colorado.  Pictures will be available on our website.

Three groups have started funds for families and staff members.  Sacheen Whitetail Cross, Director of the Immersion School and a graduate of McLaughlin is doing a silent auction and fundraiser.  Our Teach for America teachers and South Dakota Teach for America staff have started a fund for the Mac7.  The link to this fundraiser will be posted on our school’s website.  Sitting Bull School staff members started a fund for Kyle Henderson.  This link can also be found on our school’s website.  Ardyce Taken Alive is creating a community action project in support of our teacher and wrestling coach, Kyle Henderson.  A banner in his support can be signed at the McLaughlin School.

McLaughlin staff has received communication from two of the people who were first on the scene of the accident, sharing their good wishes and prayers as well as their joy at the progress of the students and staff.  The parents received a visit from a member of the Denver March Powwow committee sharing their support and a gift for each family.  McLaughlin graduates living in the Denver area have provided support to the families by sharing gift baskets and contacts with the staff and students.

We will continue to update through our webpage as needed.

PRESS RELEASE #2

McLaughlin Public School and our school board, administration and staff want to thank you for your prayers and support.  The staff and students involved in the accident have been well taken care of in the Colorado hospitals where 6 of the 7 are being cared for.  One student will be released possibly today to return home.  One staff member was released.  There will be additional updates posted to the school website.

Statement from a parent of one of the students

I want to thank the McLaughlin School District and staff for how quickly they responded and brought us to Denver to see my child.  I am so glad my child is alive and safe.  We are thankful for all the calls and texts showing concern for our family.

Statement from School Superintendent Pat Stone

Our families and children have been together since Monday evening when the parents and I flew in to be with them.  We are so grateful for the outpouring of care and support from the people at home and here in Colorado.  We expect two students to be released to travel home by the end of the week.  One staff member has been released.  I will be here to support the others as long as necessary.
